Walking, we take it for granted but it is one of the best forms of exercise, helping you stay fit, slim and be sociable too as well as being a great way to get out and explore your local area and the countryside too.
We love to walk!
Did you know that walking for just 30 minutes a day (60 minutes for children), meets the Chief Medical Officer’s minimum recommendations for physical activity. Good news huh? Even better, if 30 minutes sounds like a lot you can split this into two or three bursts a day, as long as you walk for a minimum of 30 minutes you should reap the benefits. Doctors agree that moderate exercise like walking helps protect the body from many illnesses and conditions, such as heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis and obesity. Walking is also a great way to relieve stress and stay happy. Everyone knows how a good walk can help you collect your thoughts, and being outdoors, especially in green spaces, can help fight depression and improve mental health. And the best news is almost everyone can do it and aside from a good pair of shoes, walking really won't cost you anything.
The best news is – almost everyone can do it, anywhere and at any time, for free!
Walk & Talk
Another reason to love walking is that you can do several things at once, like commute to work, pick the kids up from school, catch up with friends and even meet new people. Walking is also one of the best ways to explore your local area, to go for a walk you don't have to don hiking boots and stride off into the countryside, (though that is also fun) but you can just walk round your local town.
Time to go for a ramble
The Ramblers is celebrating its 75th year at the heart of walking in Britain. It works to encourage everyone to walk whether in countryside, cities, hills, coasts and on or off the beaten track. For 75 years it has helped build and protect Britain’s 150,000 mile long path network, it runs over 28,000 walks a year, and campaigns for better walking routes and more walking opportunities.
If you would like to walk more, but lack the confidence to venture out alone, join the Ramblers and you will become a member of a friendly local walking group offering a wide variety of led walks near you. To find out more about The Ramblers, click here.
Thanks to the Ramblers we have twenty Ramblers Association memberships to give away through our June newsletter
