Tip of the month - Spotting Catkins

Posted by Rachel Marston 22 Jan 2009 1:36pm

Lots of people don't seem to like February very much. True, the days are still very short and temperatures pretty cold but if you look there are some hints that Spring is on the way, which has to be cause for celebration. If you brave stepping outdoors this month then make sure you look for;

Catkins - These delicate fronds are a sure sign that Spring is almost with us. The catkins open, shedding pollen to the wind to ensure the next generation of Hazel trees are on the way.

Birds - listen out for songthrushes as they begin to lay claim to territory for the breeding season ahead.

Early bulbs - snowdrops, crocuses and some early daffodils will begin to emerge from the chilly soil, they can't help but cheer anyone up on a grey February day.

Frogs - look out for them on the road as they emerge from their winter hiding places and begin to move towards breeding ponds to begin spawning.

There is still time for you to put up nest boxes in your garden if you want to attract birds into your garden and watch them learn how to fly. Let us know if you have spotted any of these signs of spring yet by adding a comment below.
